On 23 April 2027, the Landesbühnen Sachsen will stage the world premiere of the chamber opera TENOCHTITLAN (libretto: Joscha Schaback) at the Festspielhaus Hellerau in Dresden. This chamber opera, commissioned as the second part of a double bill alongside Mauricio Kagel’s MARE NOSTRUM, features exactly the same cast and instrumentation as Kagel’s work. Whilst Kagel tells the story of the violent conquest and subjugation of Europe by a Central American people, TENOCHTITLAN turns the tables and tells the story of a boy from Dresden who decides to leave his climate-ravaged city to start a new life in a prosperous, foreign Central American culture.
