To mark the year of the European Capital of Culture Chemnitz 2025, the Chemnitz Theater has commissioned an opera about RUMMELPLATZ (FUNFAIR), the great posthumous social novel by Werner Bräunig. Werner Bräunig  (* May 12, 1934 in Chemnitz; † August 14, 1976 in Halle an der Saale) was posthumously celebrated in 2012 by the German arts pages as an (East German) writer in the league of "Grass, Walser and Böll" (Süddeutsche Zeitung). An unvarnished opera about everyday life in the early GDR between war trauma, communist dictatorship and the dreams of the future of post-war youth. Libretto: Jenny Erpenbeck.
